Mass General Brigham is developing a new team of Research Data Concierge experts to support the research community
The Digital Research Operations team was created in Digital in October of 2023 to enable and accelerate biomedical research and discovery through the provision of exceptional technology and data services to researchers and investigators. The new function of Research Data Concierge experts will report to the Director of Research Data Platforms.
The Digital Research Operations Data Concierge serves as the primary liaison between researchers and data teams, ensuring seamless access to accurate, timely, and relevant data. This role requires a deep understanding of data systems, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to translate business needs into actionable data solutions. The Research Data Concierge will manage data requests, provide data insights, and support decision-making processes by delivering tailored data products and services. Examples of data needs include cohort feasibility, data for projects, data governance process and connecting researchers with the appropriate resources and tools to keep data secure and compliant with MGB policies.
The Research Data Concierge team will collaborate with the data, cloud and innovation teams in Digital, and support researchers across MBG. They will act as a custodian and subject matter expert within Digital for the data needs and opportunities of Research
The Digital Research Operations Data Concierge is responsible for extracting knowledge and insights from data in order to investigate business/operational problems through a range of data preparation, modeling, analysis, and/or visualization techniques.
Essential Functions
• Researcher Engagement: Act as the primary point of contact for researchers regarding data-related inquiries and requests. Understand business objectives and translate to data requirements.
• Data Delivery: Facilitate the delivery of high-quality, actionable data reports, dashboards, and insights tailored to specific business needs. Future goal includes providing automated / self-service options. All data delivery will align with compliance and regulatory processes.
• Data Management: Coordinate with data engineers, analysts, and scientists to ensure data accuracy, integrity, reproducibility, extensibility, and availability. Issue Resolution: Troubleshoot and resolve data access or quality issues quickly and efficiently.
• Documentation & Training: Create and maintain documentation for data processes, standards, and best practices. Collaborate with IRB, Compliance and InfoSec to publish and adhere to data access and usage policies. Share this with the Data Concierge team and help to train new members of the team.
• Compliance: Track per project effort as directed.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance the data delivery experience.
• Collaborate with the enterprise teams in Digital and stakeholders across Research to co-create the vision, strategy and roadmap for research data platforms.
• Create, manage, and share an overall platform and service scorecard which articulates the value of the work undertaken by the data concierge team. Qualifications
- 3+ years in a data-related role such as data analyst, data engineer, data manager, or software developer. Experience in a client-facing role is highly desirable.
- Bachelors degree required, advanced degree preferred in data science, information systems, data & analytics., or STEM field
- This role can consider experience in lieu of a degree
- A strong foundation and experience in working in research and a complex healthcare environment
- Experience with infrastructure platforms, including Cloud
- Deep consultative experience with demonstrated ability to translate business needs into technical programs which deliver real business value
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in querying complex data structures using an SQL dialect.
- General programming skills and experience with Python preferred. Familiarity with other data-focused programming languages (e.g., SAS, R, or MATLAB).
- Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), and Excel.
- Familiarity with data management platforms, databases, and ETL processes.
- Understanding of data governance, privacy, and security practices.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ownership, ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks effectively
