GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.
The Data Analyst (DA) is a full-time position supporting health services and health economics research investigating healthcare payment, quality, and spending using Medicare claims, administrative, and encounter data through the Medicare Virtual Research Data Center (VRDC). Specifically, this person will participate in a multidisciplinary team to conduct research in three main areas:
The impact of telemedicine on low-value care - We leverage heterogeneity in health systems’ adoption of telemedicine to understand how telemedicine might influence the use of low-value services (medical care that has little to no benefit for patients yet can cause direct and cascading harms).
Primary care payment innovation - There is vigorous policy debate in DC these days about how Medicare should pay for primary care. We are studying the adoption and unintended consequences of Medicare’s new payment mechanisms.
Vertical integration - Over the last decade, traditional insurance companies have acquired provider organizations (e.g., physician practices, infusion centers, home health agencies), resulting in vertical integration between health insurance and health care delivery. We are investigating the effects of this integration on competition in the Medicare Advantage program, quality of care delivered to Medicare beneficiaries, spending, provider competition, and provider turnover.
The DA will use SAS or STATA to create analytic files, perform data cleaning, write analytic code, perform quality checks on this code, perform analyses, prepare tables, and generate plots and visualizations of data. The DA will actively contribute to ongoing research projects and grant funding proposals, including scientific and administrative tasks. The DA will also contribute to manuscript writing and submission.
The DA will need excellent attention to detail and exceptional quantitative skills. Prior experience working with claims data strongly preferred, ideally with Medicare claims data specifically. Benefits would include connection a community of health services and health economics researchers and trainees at Brigham, Harvard, and the National Bureau of Economic Research.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
